XKCD Lisp Cycles Comic

For September's Meeting, Brandon and Tyler will be doing a screencast style demo of Common Lisp (CL). They'll be showing us all the cool things you can do with CL and try to convince us why we should give up the other languages we code in to use CL instead. Beyond learning about a different programming language, this talk is sure to stir up some animated discussion about the applicability of programming languages to various environments.

Since the bulk of us will be at Defcon in Vegas next Wednesday, there isn't going to be an August meeting. Most of your ought to know that, but I figured I'd post it just to be all official.

This month we have Rich MacVarish coming up from the middle Atlantic states to give us a talk based on some work he's recently done with SCADA security. Rich recently had an opportunity to pen-test and audit a new SCADA firewall product. He'll be talking about the results of that work and what you shouldn't do when you implement a security product. This should be a very informative talk. Come on out and welcome Rich back to New England for his short visit.

Video - Hacker Jeopardy

Here's the video of our hacker jeopardy game. Hopefully, this will help get our team into the Defcon Hacker Jeopardy Tournament.

June Meeting - Hacker Jeopardy

|

In preparation for the August pilgrimage to Defcon, we'll be holding Hacker Jeopardy tryouts this month. Unfortunately, this doesn't guarantee us a slot in the game in Vegas, but it'll be hella fun anyway. We're even making a lockout button/buzzer set at this week's Tuesday night hack.

Prospective contestants need to be planning to go to Defcon, otherwise what's the point of trying out. If you would like to play, drop me an email.

Come on down (oops, wrong game show), toss back a few cold ones and be entertained as we toss out the answers and see who comes up with the right questions.

Update: NickD will be hosting Hacker Jeopardy. This should guarantee EPIC LULZ for all!

Here's the video of the Bruce's RepRap talk, which everyone agreed was a big success. Major props go to KurtK for saving our asses as last minute fill-in videographer.

Our faithful videographer, Flixis, is now setup with the blip.tv login. So now we shouldn't have to wait for my slacker self to upload the videos every month. Enjoy the show!

DC401 T-Shirts at the May Meeting

dc401-shirts.jpg

Last week, I went and took Che's awesome Quahog and Crossbones image, ran it through Illustrator's trace function and popped out a halfway decent piece of line art. Then I added 'DC401' in American Typewriter and printed out a couple of copies on transparency film. Yesterday, I exposed a screen for an hour, rinsed out the unexposed part and printed up 10 shirts. The shirts are all men's large 50/50 cotton/poly super cheap-o shirts I got at Walgreens a while back for $2 each on which to practice screenprinting.

Of course, I have to keep one for myself, and one goes to Che, since it's his artwork. That leaves 8 shirts up for grabs. Two are super collectible "error prints". In my fine benevolent dictator way, I'll come up with some sort of random and completely unfair way to distribute the shirts. Come to the May meeting to see if you get one.

Bruce Wattendorf is a Rhode Island based RepRap maker. He and his son have working on their RepStrap (because it has non replicated parts) since January 2007. Bruce will be bringing his RepRap in to demo its capabilities and talk about the process of actually building one. For anyone who's dreamed of printing 3D objects, this talk is for you.

Update: We made it to the Make: blog and there's interest from people who won't be able to make it to the meeting. Fear not! We take video of most of the talks and intend to do so with this one too. Subscribe to the RSS feed and you'll catch the video when it shows up (usually a week or two after the talk itself.)

I'm a total slacker and finally got around to posting the video from the February meeting last night. Here it is in all its glory.
